Belfast Tartan Day

28 October 2024

On Saturday 30th November the Ulster-Scots Agency will be holding the first ever Belfast Tartan Day. Register now to take part!

The highlight of the day will be the Tartan Day Dander, which will go from the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre in Cathedral Quarter to Belfast City Hall.

The dander will see bands and groups from Belfast and around Ulster including pipers, drummers, drum majors, Highland dancers and Scottish Country Dancers.

We want as many pipe band musicians and drum majors as possible to come along and take part in a massed band, so you can come along and join in even if your band isn't able to. The massed band will play well-known tunes including Scotland the Brave, Rowan Tree, Green Hills of Tyrol, The Battle's O’er, My Land and Balmoral. We expect that Heilan Laddie will also be played as a salute to the Chieftain.

We are very keen to have young people involved, including those who are new to our music and dance traditions, so aspiring pipers should feel free to come along and bring their chanters.

Mums, dads, grannies and grandas as well as friends and supporters of Ulster-Scots are invited to take part in the dander as long as they are proudly wearing something tartan.

The Dander will start at the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre at 12.00noon. The centre will open from 11.00am for tea and toilets.

At the end of the Dander all participants are invited into the City Hall for a Tartan Tea where you can collect your certificate of participation, enjoy hot drinks and seasonal treats, be entertained by a Scottish Ceilidh Band and enjoy the crack. We expect everything to be wrapped up by around 2.00-2.30pm, so you will have plenty of time to go to the Continental Market and do a bit of Christmas shopping.
